Welcome to a Progressive POV
Posted by: Shana Ray in Social Media, Lynn Woolsey on Jun 15, 2009
Hello! If you are reading this you might have already seen that there have been a few changes to the Woolsey for Congress website, if not, please feel free to take a look at some of the new additions, including videos from around the internet and an easy to use donation button.
Well, take a look after you read this post.
Another change is the introduction of this blog. The intention here is to connect you to the Congresswoman in an authentic way. Lynn Woolsey's legacy is one of taking chances (see about her first arrest here) and being an outspoken voice of the Democratic Party. Her voice naturally lends itself to the online world, a world known for allowing people to express their opinions about anything that is on their mind.
By connecting you with her, we hope to raise money for her to continue to impact the halls of Congress. While Congresswoman Woolsey is well known in her district, her impact is universal and we want to make her voice go even further by introducing her to people who might not otherwise know why she is such an important part of the progressive movement.
If you read the first post from the Congresswoman then you will know that she asked me to help spread her message through social media. My name is Shana Ray, a long time Sonoma County resident and social media consultant who mostly seems to get paid in wine and cheese. I am also a single, late twenty-something Millennial who lives on her laptop and iphone.
I didn't grow up on computers but once I got into college and bought my first PC with dial-up, I was hooked. Living in San Diego while one of my best friends lived in Chico was not a problem because we had AOL IM and were able to talk each night when we would do our homework. Seven years later and here I sit here with a brand new laptop, doing freelance marketing work, still talking to her online. The medium may have changed (Facebook, Twitter, Gtalk) but the connection is still there.
The internet has also changed the way people communicate. My connections that I have made through social media are the reason you are reading these words right now. Through my wine blogging friends, I was able to meet the Congresswoman's daughter Amy through a wine tasting event (Wine 2.0 in San Francisco).
I have no background in politics other than a few classes on political science (though I did get an A in those classes) and that is a large reason I was asked to write this blog. Much like some of the American public, I do not know that much about what our government is up to. As much as this fact saddens me to write, it is the truth of politics today.
While the internet has allowed for more information to reach the masses, I can tell you that I have so many other things going on that it sometimes feels overwhelming to try to pay attention to it all. I know I am not alone here and that there are others out there that want to know more but sometimes don't have the time to get past all the "politics" of the media to know what truly is being done.
So to the others that what to know more but are not sure where to look, welcome. Actually, welcome to each and everyone who is taking the time to read this post. We are truly excited about this new experiment and we hope you will add us to your RSS feed, donate to help continue this experiment, comment and tell others you think might be interested.
Until next time.
*shana.
